Ecologists in Action held at the Big Jump 2009 to demand a "living river" (13/07/2009)

On this occasion, the Big Jump was held on Sunday July 12th at 12 noon.

And Ecologists in Action Murcia Region has chosen instead the "beach" of the Segura River, passing by Calasparra.

Since 1995, the naturalist Robert Epple convene a crowded bathroom in different parts of the Loire River to claim a better status for all rivers in Europe, there have been several similar events, but it was from 2002 when the call started Annual Big Jump, which focuses each year thousands of people in hundreds of rivers of Europe to ask all of Europe's rivers are clean and once again become a meeting place for all.

Big Jump is an initiative of the European Rivers Network, ERN, supported by various European organizations of which, on this occasion, adds Ecologists in Action.

The environmental organization points out that the EU has set 2015 as the date on which should have picked a good ecological status of European rivers.

This means that by then bathing in the waters of our rivers should be a reality.

Pedro Luengo, coordinator for Ecologists in Action Murcia Region adds that "this action aims to draw attention to different streams simultaneously in Europe on the need to achieve good European inland waters, as reflected in the Framework Directive Water.

He adds that with the "Great Leap" is also intended to "engage citizens in conservation of rivers by recreational and festive day with a strong protest"

Luengo added to the bath in a river, much of our region, is still a utopia, as a result of their poor condition, citing "pollution, the artificiality of its banks or lack of control over water withdrawals that reduced circulating flows significantly in most of them. "

He adds that the result is that "in recent years have been lost or severely deteriorating numerous river beaches that had been traditionally used by citizens."

The place chosen for Ecologists in Action: Calasparra beach

Ecologists in Action, Region Murcia Calasparra has chosen this year for this "dip" reinvidicativo, in response to "White Water Canal" that the municipality, together with the Tourist Consortium Almadenes, projects in the area.

A project, "says Los Angeles Trujillo, a spokesman for Ecologists in Action Calasparra-" will not go through the channel surrounding the Island of Juan Vacas, but will be the Segura river bed itself, which will be installed to increase cross dams water velocity "

He added that "building two giant pools (one high 7 meters above the ground) that not only occupy the whole island of Juan Vacas, but need the surrounding rice fields."

This, they say-have a significant environmental impact compounded by the ecological importance of the area, because the project is located between two wetlands inventory (river Segura and Calasparra rice fields), and within the European Natura 2000 Network.

In fact this year, the environmental organization awarded a second prize of Attila Awards each June 5 are made public, the Mayor of Calasparra (D. Jesus Navarro) and Almadenes Tourism Consortium.

Was the "most remarkable Nonsense."

The merits: the commitment of both in promoting unnecessary projects in natural environments of the River Segura, incompatible with the proper conservation of some of the Segura River areas that still have good environmental conditions and landscape.
