Agriculture completes its work on the fishing zone 'The Olivarejo', consisting of 31 new posts (28/03/2009)

The Ministry of Agriculture and Water has completed the work of matching the fishing zone 'The Olivarejo' in the town of Calasparra, which consists of 31 new positions to meet the growing demands of regional collective of fans of this sport.

According to the director general of Natural Heritage and Biodiversity, Pablo Fernández, with these new infrastructure, the aforementioned stretch of the river Segura has become an "ideal place to practice sport fishing in all areas: regional, national and international."

The work has involved an investment of 120,000 euros and consisted in cleaning and clearing of the selected points, the mechanical excavation and concreting of the slab support and fishing platforms, the lining of the positions with limestone, plant restoration, cleaning the environment and the placement of posters and signs.

Promotion of sport fishing

The manager said that the Ministry regional issues per year between 4,500 and 5,000 fishing licenses and, accordingly, conducts various activities for the promotion, preservation and maintenance of existing infrastructure and the habitats where they settle major fish populations.

In this regard, he stressed that the main objective of the Ministry is "to provide quality service to fans of the sport and ensure that over the years, a sustainable and orderly development of regional fish wealth."

To do this, at the request of different agencies, "has intensified control invasive alien species considered and reviewed the catch quotas in different drawings catfish fishing."

Similarly, Pablo Fernandez noted that the Directorate-General examine the possibility of regulating fishing for this species in the spawning season, in order to avoid mass arrests that may affect their conservation. "

Space diversity

The Region of Murcia has a wide variety of spaces where sport fishing.

In the Segura river are the best places in inland, with four preserves located in the towns of Moratalla (The Cenajo) Calasparra (The Esparragal), Cieza (Hoya Garcia) and Abarán (The Jarral), occupying 20 km its banks.

These riparian environments of great diversity and environmental richness, add, for requesting fish, reservoirs in the watershed as the Argos (Cehegín), Alfonso XIII (Calasparra) and La Cierva (Mula).
