UPCT analyzes of space debris remains found in Calasparra (19/11/2015)

The Polytechnic University of Cartagena (UPCT) is analyzing remains of 'space junk' found Sunday in the Sierra del Molino de Calasparra.

This is the third sphere fragments found in the region of Murcia, which could belong to an auxiliary fuel tank Aerospace.

Analyses are performed by technical Support Service for Technological Research (SAIT) UPCT and the National Reference Center for Professional Training of Cartagena.

Technicians are exploring the material composition, which is a metal fitting which allows the fuel outlet reservoir space.

They are also analyzing composite mesh that covers the area.

Analysis has verified that it is composed of carbon fiber, said Alberto Alcolea, technical director of the SAIT area Instrumentation and Juan Antonio Madrid, director of the Reference Center of Cartagena FP.

The results of these analyzes are of particular interest because they allow you to know the behavior of these materials under extreme conditions of reentry, such as changes of pressure and high temperature by friction with the atmosphere, say the experts.

Analyzed the remains were found by hunters and dog have dimensions of 200 centimeters in circumference and a diameter of 70 centimeters.

It weighs around 15 kilos.

Its appearance is similar to a Swiss ball.

The stainless steel particles show fusions observed on its surface, with rounded shapes, which show that have been subjected to temperatures above 1500 ° C, causing melting.

To analyze these fragments space junk optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy is provided with a microanalyzer energy dispersive X-ray
