Evolution of fire

The fire broke out in the foothills of the Sierra del Puerto around 19:00 hours and in just ten minutes, another outbreak was detected south of the Sierra del Molino, located on the opposite side of the first fire zone.

The local wind speed-setting between 21 and 26 miles per hour, air humidity and high temperatures provided the fire is spreading very fast, with a running speed between 4.5 and 10 km / h , so that the flame travel an average of 61.4 meters per minute.

The seriousness of the situation led the regional government to raise in just two hours from 1 to 2 alert level Infomur Plan, which in turn meant the request for assistance to other regions.

The flames swept sunny spots in the Sierra del Molino and Albarda, jumped into the river gorge Quípar and stepped into the shadow of the Sierra de la Palera in the town of Cieza.

The perimeter of the fire was 25 miles and 6.5 miles along.

The troops worked day and night in the work of extinguishing the fire, which finally gave controlled three days after the start and was declared extinct on September 17.

Some 875 people participated in the fighting, including fire brigades, forest, local police, Civil Defence volunteers, members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), 237 vehicles, 16 planes and the Plane of Air Media Coordination (Acovi) .

Reforestation

Campos noted that the flames swept large areas of plant space with high environmental value, which is classified as Special Protection Area (SPA) and Site of Community Landscape (LIC), but qualified that did not suffer any damage enclaves archaeological sites of El Pozo, whales, and Serreta Creeper.

The burned area was covered by Aleppo pine forest, scrub, and grassland espartal, while it destroyed the habitat of species such as ibex, wild boar, partridge, rabbits, owls, peregrine falcons and golden eagles, Bonelli and roadways.

The counselor explained that the repopulation of the area burned in the Sierra del Molino, which starts this year and through 2015, will be held in two phases.

In the first, burned trees are removed to prevent pests and will be holding activities to prevent soil erosion and pesticide treatments.

And then, between 2012 and 2015, repopulate areas where no trees grew, repair roads and areas of fire run.

In the nineties there were two major fires in the Northwest region of Murcia, in particular, one in the Sierra del Molino in 1991 and another in Moratalla in 1994, but these burned areas do not coincide with the surface affected by the recent incident.
