Public Health investigates the origin of an outbreak of salmonella in Calasparra (04/10/2016)

Health Inspectorate investigates a butcher shop where most of those affected acquired a sausage, possible origin of the poisoning

The Directorate General of Public Health of the Ministry of Health is studying a possible outbreak of salmonella in Calasparra that in recent days has affected 60 people who have had mild symptoms and whose evolution is favorable, having consumed a sausage from a butcher, possible origin of the poisoning.

Eight of those affected have been treated at the Hospital of Northwest Caravaca de la Cruz, where they have been under observation.

Currently only it remains hospitalized for observation and forecast high tomorrow, a woman of 95 years.

The remaining patients recovered satisfactorily.

Public Health developed the operational plans for such situations and the cessation of the activity of the carnage in regard to the sale of sausages and fresh meat was decreed.

Inspectors have analyzed the state of the carnage without finding deficiencies and in the coming days will determine what could have happened, because the technicians of general management also took samples of the products that were on sale the day began to occur cases.

The Director General of Public Health, Manuel Molina Boix, explained that "the samples, both the meat product of the carnage, as surfaces and utensils and handlers, are being analyzed in the laboratory of Public Health".

He added that samples sent to the National Center for Microbiology in Majadahonda "to be analyzed and determine the type of salmonella."

Boix Molina said there await the outcome of the analysis to clarify the origin.

Thus, "once we have the results we can determine the source of salmonella, conclude the investigation and take appropriate decisions."
