The Community will restore the terraces of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Hope of Calasparra (20/05/2018)

The governing board of the natural reserve of groves and riverside forests of Cañaverosa, chaired by the Ministry of Employment, Universities, Enterprise and Environment through the Directorate General of Natural Environment, this week approved the repair work on the terraces of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Hope, whose surroundings were deteriorated by episodes of torrential rains and floods of the Segura river.

During the meeting of this body, also composed of the municipalities of Calasparra and Moratalla, agricultural organizations and ecologists, the University of Murcia or land owners, also analyzed other actions for this 2018 and took stock of the actions developed during the past year.

The General Director of the Natural Environment, Consuelo Rosauro, highlighted the importance of this participation body to contribute to the maintenance of a natural area such as the Cañaverosa reserve.

"It is an enclave of great environmental value within the network of natural spaces, with one of the best riverside forests in the entire Region." The coordination among all parties and administrations involved in its management is essential to maintain an ecosystem It has a great value because of its scarcity at the regional level and because of the great variety of life forms it houses, "said Consuelo Rosauro.

The project, in particular, will consist of the adaptation of 175 meters of the shore of the lower terrace of the Sanctuary.

These works, which will have a budget of 300,000 euros, are intended to respond to both the conservation and improvement of the natural values ​​of the Region as well as the safety and enjoyment of them by visitors.

Among the actions carried out during the past year in this protected area is the increase in impacts through social networks (Facebook and Twitter), with 136 publications that reached a total of 169,027 people.

In addition, and for the first time, the data collected among visitors to this space was analyzed to analyze their profile and be able to determine more effectively the actions to be developed during this year in terms of dissemination and awareness.

With respect to the activities of the past year, the environmental volunteer activities in the field of conservation of bats (flying mammals such as bats or flying foxes) and control of invasive alien species in the vicinity of the Segura River included in the European project also stand out LIFE Ripisilvanatura, coordinated by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation and of which the Office of Socioeconomic Promotion of the Environment is a collaborating partner.
