The Government encourages the refurbishment of the battery of wells in the syncline Calasparra to mitigate the effects of drought (29/01/2016)

These actions, emergency declared last December, were included in the decrees approved by the Government in May 2015 to mitigate the effects of drought in the Júcar and Segura

The Council of Ministers, on a proposal from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, has agreed to promote the refurbishment of the battery of wells in the Syncline Calasparra (Murcia) to further address the drought affecting the scope of the Segura basin.

This is different actions declared emergency that will result in the launch of own surveys of the Segura basin, including in the renovation and full exploitation of the battery of wells in the Syncline Calasparra, amounting to 800,000 euros.

MEASURES TO OFFSET THE EFFECTS OF DROUGHT

These measures were listed among the outstanding actions agreed by the Government, the two royal decrees approved last May, to alleviate the effects of severe drought situation prevailing in the basins of Segura and Júcar.

So, to alleviate the supply deficit that will affect the users linked to the Tajo-Segura, the resolution adopted today by the Council of Ministers allow the Segura basin to perform the extraction of a gross volume of 30, 7 cubic hectometres in the aquifer Calasparra Syncline.

Moreover, as an emergency action shall be exempt from the process of environmental assessment, pursuant to current legislation, taking into account the reports of both the Hydrographic Confederation and the Community of the Region of Murcia, and ensuring environmental flows and monitoring of good environmental status of the waters.

Many measures already implemented

This new project is in addition to the many measures that the Government has been taking since the beginning of the drought in order to increase the availability of water supply and irrigation.

Among others, the production of desalinated water, helps to lower its price and emergency works to improve delivery.

In total, the two royal decrees Drought in force until September 2016, a battery of actions were contemplated in the amount of over 50 million euros, including the launch of surveys of underground aquifers to increase supply resource.

FOLLOW THE ROYAL DECREE OF DROUGHT

From what has been agreed today in the Cabinet, the Board of Governors of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, where are represented all users, will meet soon to track these and other measures agreed under the Royal Decree drought.
