A mural in the Plaza de la Encomienda remembers local poet Antonio López forever (23/04/2018)

This Sunday, coinciding with the celebration of the Book and Reading Day, the City Council of Calasparra has carried out a poetic encounter in the street.

The cultural event has served to pay tribute to local poet Antonio López, 96, author of hundreds of poems throughout his life.

Beloved by his neighbors, the mayor of the town, José Vélez Fernández, has highlighted his "soul of a poet" and his height as a person.

"Antonio has been able to bring more than one to poetry, carrying out an important work of dissemination of this literary genre."

Antonio, the awakening of his hobby came to him in his maturity, but it entered him with such force that he had practically no other motivation than declamation and writing of poems: at 87 he published his first book, as he remembered it at once.

"It was listening to the great maestro Manuel Benítez Carrasco that changed my life and made me love poetry with passion and find time to write."

And he did it on any subject that inspired him.

Calasparra, friendship, love and women, to whom he has dedicated many of his rhymes and sonnets.

The meeting counted on relatives, friends and neighbors of the poet, among whom were his wife, Pascuala Sánchez, the mayor of Culture, Teresa García, the writer Pedro Antonio Martínez Robles, the actor José Ángel Moya, or the mayor of Youth, Antonio José Merino, and took place in the Plaza de la Encomienda, near his home.

The mayor and the author of "Dame de beber, mujer" uncovered a mural with a poetry dedicated to Calasparra that, for all time, will remind the author of Calasparra and his great poetic legacy.
