Firefighters, forest agents, Civil Guard, Local Police and volunteer civilian personnel participated in the work of extinction.

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, within the framework of the operation 'PYROS', has developed an investigation aimed at clarifying the causes of two fires that, last February, devastated four hectares of forest mass in the municipality of Calasparra.

The operation has been settled with a person investigated as alleged perpetrator of crime against collective security, due to intentional forest fire.

The proceedings began when the Benemérita investigated the causes of a forest fire, which occurred in the first days of February in an area near the railway, located in the Peralejo area of ​​the municipality of Calasparra.

Due to the thick forest mass, the fire burned about 200 square meters of forest mass, for which a broad deployment of facilities was necessary, involving firefighters, forest agents, as well as members of the Civil Guard And of the Local Police.

Experts from the Civil Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard began the necessary work to investigate the cause and origin of the fire, with the preparation of the corresponding technical and photographic report, as well as obtaining information Of potential witnesses.

The investigation revealed evidence of intentionality in the origin of the fire.

Parallel to the investigation, the Civil Guard reinforced the specific services aimed at fire prevention, with exhaustive surveillance of the forest areas close to the railway, as it passes through the municipality of Calasparra.

At the end of February, as the investigation progressed, a new forest fire occurred in an area close to the first case, where more than three hectares of pine, lowland and broom were burned.

Invaluable citizen collaboration

Residents of the area, who were carrying out agricultural work, alerted to the 1-1-2 of the event, which originated the deployment of means against fires.

The site was attended by Civil Guard, Local Police and environmental agents who, together with residents of the area who volunteered, managed to extinguish the fire and prevent its spread.

Simultaneously, work began on the recognition of the area to ascertain the causes and origin of the fire, which, together with the collaboration of eyewitnesses, allowed to determine the intentionality of the fires, as well as to locate a person in the place and time in Which were initiated.

The Civil Guard conducted a strike in the area and located a person, who was operated a lighter, as well as a large number of antidepressant and antipsychotic drugs, psychiatric utility.

In the course of the investigations, a blister of drugs similar to those found among the suspect's belongings was located near the ignition point of the fire.

In addition, the vehicle owned by this person was located in the same place and at the time the fire originated, parked in the vicinity.

In view of the indications and testimonies obtained, the Civil Guard has completed the operation 'PYROS' with the investigation of proceedings as investigated a male person, 29, a neighbor of Caravaca de la Cruz as alleged author of an offense against security Collective, by intentional forest fire.

Up to now, two forest fire offenses, related to collective security, have been clarified due to the forest fires that occurred on February 4 and 23 in the municipality of Calasparra, allegedly attributed to the person investigated.

The investigations and the person investigated have been made available to the Court of First Instance and Instruction of Caravaca de la Cruz (Murcia).

The perpetrators of this type of acts may incur a crime related to collective security, punishable with imprisonment from one to five years and fines of twelve to eighteen months.

Ecological value of the affected area

The strip of forest located in the municipality of Calasparra is rich in areas classified as Place of Community Importance (LIC) and Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA), making it an important environmental heritage for the Region of Murcia.
