ANSE: "Young people are involved in the fight against Invasive Alien Species in the Segura River" (27/07/2016)

Fifteen young people from all regions have decided to enjoy an active holiday, engaging in the recovery of the Segura River through a field.

The work camp organized by the City of Calasparra and ANSE, has the support of the Directorate General of Youth and is part of the LIFE + RIPISILVANATURA project, funded by the EU and coordinated by the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura.

Fifteen young people have opted for a different summer, working for 12 days, the recovery of the River Segura through control of invasive alien species (IAS) that threaten riparian forests or gallery, the indigenous forest of our rivers.

The effort of these young people are being channeled through a field co-organized by ANSE work and the municipality of Calasparra, which also has the support of the Department of Youth of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia.

The field work is part of the LIFE RIPISILVANATURA project funded by the EU and coordinated by the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura.

Young people are involved in the development of the different actions of LIFE + RIPISILVANATURA project among which is to eliminate, in collaboration with EPlan, Invasive Alien Species (cane mainly) from the path of the Huertecica in Cañaverosa (one of the best bits riparian forest of the Region of Murcia).

In addition, volunteers support the work of replacing native forest reedbeds by banks, inventory and control of invasive exotic wildlife, removal of waste from the river, etc.

How could it be otherwise, the labor camp has a wide range of leisure, culture and sports related to the river thanks to the participation of the School of canoeing Calasparra.

Invasive alien species are a serious problem of environmental conservation, to the extent that the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) considers the second leading cause of biodiversity loss.

Segura Basin is a paradigmatic example of invasion by alien invasive species and serious environmental and social problems that they trigger.

For example an important part of the banks are dominated by reed (Arundo donax) that prevent or hinder the recovery of the riparian forest, creating security problems (fire, flood).

Moreover, the fish community is dominated by invasive alien species as bleak (Alburnus Alburnus), carp (Cyprinus carpio), walleye (Sander lucioperca) that have displaced native species like catfish south (Andalusian Barbel).

In addition, increasingly more frequent resolved the presence of pets (American freshwater turtles (Trachemys) mainly) in aquatic systems in the region, after being abandoned by their owners
